H.E.M. School is fortunate to be located in the best community in Honduras. Obviously we are very proud to be called Copanecos and have good reason to be so.
A brief summary of the key points about Santa Rosa is as follows:
Our climate is an example of what you'll find in Heaven. Honduras is a tropical country, so we never see snow. However, Santa Rosa de Copán is fairly high up in the mountains, which means that our nights are cool and the temperature never gets too hot in the day. Please don't take this to mean that winter is sunny and warm. Rather our winter months of December and January, due to our altitude, are cold by Honduran standards and we have a lot of light rain during those 2 months.
Security in Santa Rosa de Copán is excellent due to a variety of local factors.
Our location: we are located 2 hours from the corner where Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala meet -- an easy long weekeng trip. We are one hour from Mt. Celaque (a natural reserve on one of the highest mountains in Honduras) and 1 3/4 hours from Copán Ruinas which is home to the ruins of the southern capital of the ancient Mayan empire. As one teacher pointed out, the times quoted are in a car, so if you don't make friends with comeone with a vehicle, you will obviously find the public busses take longer and you will be dealing with the convenience level of rural Honduras. It was also strongly recommended that you buy one of the many guide books on Central America to see what interest you and how far inside the border of these countries your interests reside. Plus given our location in the center of Central America, longer breaks such as Christmas and Easter place us well for trips throughout the region from Costa Rica in the South to Mexico up north.
Santa Rosa de Copán, while an excellent example of a Spanish colonial community, is also home to several fantastic inexpensive restaurants, some excellent internet cafes and recently even a movie theater. The American restaurant chains have not yet arrived, but we have our own version of fast food -- baliadas sold on the street corner.
For far better information on Santa Rosa de Copán, please check out Warren Post's website . Warren originally came for a short experience in Santa Rosa and liked our community so much he decided to stay and open a pizza restaurant.
