H.E.M. School has 25 teachers in total covering everything from pre-kindergarten to grade 11 (the last school grade in Honduras). The majority are native Honduran and many of our teachers from grade 1 and higher are bilingual. One of our current teachers is an ex-student of our school who proceeded on to university in San Pedro before returning to work in her hometown. Over the past years we have had a variety of foreign staff including teachers from America, Canada, England and Japan. We have received offers to help from several volunteers from various parts of the world who have learned English in their local bilingual schools and are now certified, but when reqruiting foreign volunteers to teach, we have a stong preference for native English speaking staff. This assists the students not just in grammar, but also in pronounciation. Naturally, the smaller bilingual schools like ours are in a constant struggle to find and attract the best qualified volunteers. We have had some outstanding volunteers and others have struggled to adapt to local conditions. Each one, however, has contributed to the development of our students. Details about arrangements for foreign staff are available in the page called Arrangements for Teachers.

Just like our students, our teachers wear uniforms (with the exception of Fridays). Uniforms are the norm in Honduras -- not a sign of an exclusive boarding school -- and perform a fairly important role in Honduran schools. They eliminate competition in clothing styles which at times places extreme pressure on students in North American schools who have limited resources. Uniforms are also a cultural tool to teach respect and pride to students. It differentiates their time and efforts at school from the everyday life in the street or on the soccer field.

Administration Administration

The administrator for the school is "Miss Gloria". Miss Triny (pictured on the left) is the principal for the school and also one of the founders. Miss Triny was trained as a teacher, but only spent 2 years teaching before becoming a principal of an earlier bilingual school. She continues to teach as well as carry the role of principal. "Miss Gilma" recently joined the administration at HEM School as the school counsellor. She invests a significant part of her time dealing with schedules in addition to her responsibilities directly with students and their various challenges.
